About Pearl Quality

At W.CEAL , we’re all about quality, variety, and affordability. We grade our pearl to meet our customer's needs. We ensure that you are getting the best suitable products for you. We determine the quality of pearl according to pearl nacre quality, shape, luster, size, and surface.

Grading Of Pearl

Before discussing pearl quality, one must remember that there are almost no perfect pearls. Even the pearls considered the most valuable in the world are not.

Nacre Quality

The thickness of a pearls nacre layer significantly affects its beauty and wearability.

Nacre is the silky, crystalline coating of a pearl made of aragonite. These crystals refract light as it passes along the pearl’s surface, creating a shimmering iridescence—the more layers of nacre increase a pearls’ brilliance and durability.

Luster

Luster is the measure of quantity and quality of light that is reflected from the surface, or just under the surface of a pearl. It is what gives a natural or cultured pearl its unique beauty. The luster of good quality pearls is sharp and bright. You should be able to see your reflection clearly on the surface of a pearl. Any pearl that appears too white, dull or chalky, is of low quality.

Surface Quality

It is almost impossible achievement of the perfect pearl. Anything with organic origins will inherently have imperfections. Even pearls with thick nacre can have surface characteristics such as wrinkles, tiny bubbles, spots, or other small blemishes.

Size

It takes at least a year and a half for an oyster to produce a pearl. If a pearl is allowed more time, it can produce an even larger pearl. The problem is that the unpredictable whims of Mother Nature make it difficult for an oyster to survive, let alone create a pearl in the minimum timeframe.

The difficulty of cultivating large pearls makes them rarer and more valuable. Prices can go up rapidly with each millimeter in size.

Shape

The common shapes of pearls are round, button, baroque, drop, oval, circle, rice, fancy. Using the different shape of pearl accessories can create different fashion looks.

color

color plays into pearl grading depends on two things -

  • Body Color - This should be even throughout and absent of discoloration or mottling

  • Overtones - These should be distinct, giving the pearl a glowing luminescence of pinks, greens, and silvers
